When you want to go out in the possible dark cold and wet with a dog and a load vest full of kit, to find a missing person. When you train as often as you can to be as good as you can be at what you are doing. When you raise funds for your charity. You know its a volunteer thing!

Nav's
On Saturday, together with some other members of our team and two instructors, I did my navigation course.
Anyone who knows me will tell you that me a map and a compass are a recipe for disaster! It was the last hurdle to get over before becoming fully qualified.
I wondered if I should maybe just hand back my kit put my hands up and say "Its been good while it lasted" but as with anything else I get my teeth into I'm not going to give up that easily.
I headed off to the Devils Dyke in East Sussex for the first half of the day, most of which was class room work. I don't mind admitting that by lunch time my brain was fried and I thought I might well be on the way out!
A shortish drive in convoy to Bignor Hill for the Afternoon session followed.
Cold slight rain in the air and superbly windy we started out, pacing and landscape, handrails, grid North and magnetic North, measuring, six figure map references, map symbols, natural features and a whole host of 5m contours...
We all passed!
For myself and another this means we are now operational!
Perfect end to the day!
